Sustainable Summits Conference- NZ to host 2016 Conference at Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

In August 2014 I attended the second international Sustainable Summits Conference in Colorado, USA.

Catching up on what are the pressure points and practical solutions to crowded mountains was fascinating. See http://www.alpinist.com/doc/web14x/wfeature-sustainable-summits-aac for an easy summary.

John Cocks, the President of the New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC), also attended. We suggested to the conference that New Zealand would like to host the 3rd Sustainable Summits Conference.

Since then, John and I have been busy – confirming support from NZAC; seeking a grant and support from Department of Conservation (DOC) and other potential supporters; lining up key speakers; and confirming a venue (Aoraki/Mount Cook) and dates for the conference. From the start of the idea, Ngai Tahu have been very supportive of the conference.

It is great to now hear that DOC has provided the Summit with a small grant (see http://www.doc.govt.nz/get-involved/funding/community-conservation-partnerships-fund/successful-applications-2015/).

Guest speakers (Dawa Steven Sherpa from Nepal, Peter Rupitsch of Austria, Roger Robinson from Alaska and, from New Zealand, Sir Tipene O’Regan, Lou Sanson and Simon Cox) have agreed to present.

Our website, http://sustainable-summits.com/, has just been launched . We will keep it updated with news of new sponsors/supporters and speakers.
